Dog Toilet

Dogs and the Toilet
by Ben Waterworth

Any dog that you take care of be it older or younger while in home dog sitting will inevitably need to be correctly potty trained at some point in its life. This is to make sure that you do not have an out of control pooch that feels as though it can go wherever it wants inside your own house as well as avoiding any unsavoury surprises inside your home for you to clean up.

There are a few things you can do to make sure your dog knows where to go and where not to go to avoid any messes in the future. Firstly, make a spot where you feel is the best for your dog to relieve itself, be it outside in your garden or on a mat somewhere that is easiest to clean up. If you hire a dog sitter, ensure you seek a sitter who is keen to perform dog training tasks, such as toilet training.

Every meal and drink, take it outside after it's finished and gives it a treat to show it has done a good job. After it has done what it needs to do, don't clean it up immediately as your pooch has to know that it went in the correct area. However, doing the complete opposite is also important if it goes in the wrong area!

When you take your dog out to its area, use exactly the same things time and time again such as "let's go outside" as it will remember these phrases and connect them with going to the bathroom.

Also, as just mentioned with the going inside part and ensuring they don't do it, clean areas in which your pooch may relieve itself inside straight away to avoid your dog sensing the area is a correct area to keep going in. Dogs have a strong smell and can sometimes associate their previous accidents as the right area to go to again.

Accidents can't always be avoided and can sometimes happen at night when you and they are asleep. Watch what times you feed your dog and make sure it isn't to close to their sleeping time, and make their sleeping areas not as loose so that they don't have the opportunity to go where they sleep.

And always make sure you are quick in taking them to the spot to do their business after their meal time! With a few suggestions like this behind you now you can feel more confident in training your dog and keeping a clean and savoury household!
